This gene produces a protein that functions as a cytoplasmic enzyme in energy balance and serves as a key serum biomarker for myocardial infarction. The encoded protein catalyzes the reversible transfer of phosphate from ATP to other phosphogens, including creatine phosphate. In addition to other tissues, it functions as a homodimer in striated muscle, and in the heart, it forms a heterodimer with a brain isozyme.
