Elizabeth (Libby) Smith is Associate Adjunct Professor in the department of Social & Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. She is a qualitative researcher whose work has used interviews, focus groups, and archival sources. Her research focuses on tobacco control, and in particular, on the tobacco industry. Recent projects have included a study of the tobacco industry’s relationship with the lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender community, the tobacco industry’s involvement with the U.S. military, and tobacco industry interest in diet and obesity issues.

She has published in journals such as American Journal of Public Health, Tobacco Control, European Journal of Public Health, Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, and Journal of Health Communication and served as a consultant for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and for the Department of Justice in its civil suit against the tobacco industry. She received her degree in History from the University of Pennsylvania.
